We decided to stay two nights in one of Murray Gunn's cabins because it was raining heavily. This gave us time to visit his museum which burned in 1990 but still had a lot of memorabilia. Then we went to Te Anau to get new brake pads installed after overnight shipping from Invercargill. We needed them as we drove in the rain to Queenstown, over the mountains through the Gates of Haast, past the flooded walking path to the Fox Glacier and past Pancake Rocks to Nelson. There we waited a day for the ferry to take us back to Wellington on the North Island. After 4,826 kilometers (2995 miles) we ended our South Island trip back at Tauranga. |
